Skin abscess detection using sonography

One of the complications of a pyoderma is abscess formation.

This carpenter presented with a localized skin infection. The lesion was NOT fluctuant.

Ultrasound showed pyoderma. Notice the skin and subcutaneous thickening due to edema.

With transducer pressure, notice the fluid movement downwards which indicated pus collection.

Ultrasound is much more sensitive than palpation for detection of pus collection (ie abscess formation).

Incision was carried out based on the ultrasound finding.
