HIDRADENITIS SUPPURATIVA CHARITY SHOW
QUOTING THE FACEBOOK EVENT: “This is an awesome show compiled of a bunch of local punk, indie, grunge, and alt-rock bands performing to raise money for Hidradenitis Suppurativa. Money from this event will go to the HS Foundation and Pen, author of HS Warrior who is starting a relief fund. This money will help patients with HS get better care and start research. ”

We asked MaKellee, the organizer of this special event, what her purpose and intentions where.
HSAWARENESS.ORG: MaKellee, why did you decide to organize such an event? How important is raising public awareness for Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS)? How important is this event to your local community and what intentions and/or expectations do you have for the events impact?
MaKellee: I decided to do this event after I had lost everything to this disease. My dreams were to go into professional ballet and maybe pro color guard. It took all of that away from me. I am also an artist, and after it went to my armpits, I had trouble painting and drawing due to arm jitters. After seeing what was taken away from me, I started actually making an effort to search for other HS groups. I saw many others were in the same boat as me and how much worse many others have had it. After 10 major surgeries and nothing working for me ON TOP OF seeing that people actually have it even worse than that, I had to do something. I’m huge into the local and underground music scene and know a lot of people. I thought it was a great idea to pull both of those things together to benefit both.
My mission when starting this was so simple: to just get the name and definition out. Around here, in small towns, I got bullied throughout school and got stares at the store from people who just did not understand and did not want to understand what people can face in life. Now, my mission is to not only raise awareness for this disease but to raise awareness for an end to it. The more people we get, the more this disease can be put down. Awareness is everything. People tend to not bother themselves with what they don’t understand. It’s human nature.
This event has become very important to my family and much of the local and underground music scene and its followers. So, for around here, that translates to A LOT AND GROWING. This event attracts hundreds, close to over a thousand people. We’re looking to double that this year and are so far reaching that goal. My intentions for this are for people to not only understand what HS is and how it needs awareness and research but for people to understand the true nature of chronic illnesses themselves and what people out there really secretly suffer from BECAUSE OF the lack of awareness and support.
